The World Walkers: Unknown World: Piper: Wrong Place, Wrong Time

I stepped through the portal, still trying to rub whatever it was off my fingers, and when I looked around I realised that something had gone very wrong. “He always was too clever for his own good,” a male voice said, making my heart sink. “The only way he could have got you through the portal with that on your hands was if he used a certain ritual that he should know better then to try, because he knows how easy it is for someone to have already made certain that the person in question will end up in a place of their choosing. It won’t take him long to follow you, though, so it’s time to move.”

A hand gripped hold of my wrist, so tightly that I winced, and started dragging me down the street. “Who are you?” I asked, even though I doubted he was going to answer. “Why am I here?”

“Well, my dear, I am his arch nemesis, and you’re here because he was stupid enough to fall in love with you.” Without even thinking about it I shook my head. “You may not think he does, but I know, for a fact, that he feels much more for you that he should, which is why he’s going to follow you.”

“Into a trap?”

“Exactly, because I have things that I need to get done and he’s been in my way for much longer than I anticipated. He’s, sadly, much smarter than I thought he was when I first heard about him, so he’s been able to stop certain plans that I didn’t think it was possible for someone to stop.”

“Or maybe you just aren’t as smart as you think you are.”

“That is also a valid possibility, but not one that you should mention right now. Without him you have no way back, unless I chose to help you, and, when you say things like that, it makes me not want to help you.”

“In order for the assumption to be valid you think he’s either going to walk into your trap or that I’m incapable of looking after myself, one of which might not be true and the other isn’t. He did, thankfully, know a ritual that would get me through the portal, which was helpful, but I knew exactly who was setting the trap in the first place, which means…”

“You were looking for me?”

“Congratulations.” Lying to him was easier than I thought it would be, once I actually worked out who it was, and if I was going to help Jude I was going to need to be fast. “Of course I was looking for you. Jude mentioned you to me a couple of times, although not by name and not by that useless phrase ‘arch nemesis’, but I know enough about you to realise that you might well be my best option.”

“Best option?” He glanced back at me, confusion filling his eyes. “You want my help with something?”
